Continuum for Windows phone

Continuum is one of the new feature in Windows 10that comes into play with both the Start screen and the modern apps, switching the view to the format suited to PC or tablet use.

This feature turns your Windows phone into a big screen projector and a big time productivity tool. You can use an adapter or dock to connect a TV or any monitor, and then open any app to see a content on a larger screen. Show off your favorite stuff on a Windows 10 PC without the use of an adapter or dock.

Note:

Continuum requires additional hardware and is available only on selective phones running Windows 10.



Use your Windows phone like a PC

Continuum lets you to use your phone like a PC, connect a keyboard and mouse to your phone and grant PC-like powers to your phone.

  • You can create and edit office documents on your phone as like in PC.
  • You can also send email and can even type text messages on your connected screen.
  • When you are done with all of your stuffs, it is saved on to your phone.
  • Watch videos, upload your photos, or surf the web on your connected screen.

Use your phone like a phone

Even when you connect your phone to a PC or to any display or monitor, you can still use your phone as an actual phone.

  • You make and receive phone calls.
  • You can send and receive text messages.
  • You can also check your social media apps.

Use your phone as a touchpad

If your phone is connected to a PC or to any display and you want to use your phone to control your connected screen,

  • Select Tap to controlin the Continuum banner which would be at the top of your screen.
  • Then swipe your finger around the screen of your phone to move the cursor.

Change your Background

You can change or set the background photo on your connected screen more often as you like. To change the background photo on your connected screen,

  • Click on the Start icon, swipe over to the All apps list, and then select Settings from the list, then select Personalization -> Start.
  • Under Second display, make your own choice.

Note:

You will get to see the second display only as an option, when your phone is connected to a TV, monitor or PC.

Set up Continuum for your Windows phone

Setting up Continuum depends on what type of hardware you are using on your Windows phone. Here are some things that you will need to get started with Continuum.

  • A TV or monitor with HDMI input.
  • AMobile phone running Windows 10 that is compatible with Continuum.
  • A compatible accessory to connect your phone with the TV or monitor.
  • A power outlet in your devices to plug in your dock or adapter.

Connecting to a TV or monitor

The two types of accessories that you can use to connect your phone with a TV or monitor.

  • For wired connection, you can use wired docks to connect your phone with a TV or monitor.
  • For wireless connection, use Miracast adapters to connect your phone wirelessly with a TV or monitor.

Wired dock

To connect your phone with a TV or monitor using a wired dock, use these steps:

Plug in the dock to a power outlet of your TV or monitor.

If you connect your phone to a TV, make sure that the input of your TV is set to HDMI.

Plug in the dock to the HDMI port on your TV or monitor.

Finally, plug in your phone to the dock.

Wireless adapter

  • To connect your phone using a wireless adapter:
  • Plug in the adapter to a power outlet.
  • If you are connecting your phone to a TV, make sure that the input of your TV is set to HDMI.
  • Plug in the adapter to the HDMI port on your TV or monitor.
  • From your phone, swipe over to the All apps list and select Continuum from the list of apps.
  • Then, select Set up.
  • Note: You will only see this screen the first time you connect.
  • Select Wireless adapter, and then select Connect.
  • From the Connect screen, select the name of the wireless adapter.
  • Connecting your phone to a PC
  • You can show off your favorite content without the use a wired dock or wireless adapter
  • Windows PC
  • To connect your phone using a PC:
  • Plug in the PC to a power outlet, then turn it on, if you have not turned it ON already.
  • Then, sign in.
  • On the Windows screen, select the Start button, thenselect Settings -> System -> Projecting to this PC, and then select the option Available everywhere or Available everywhere on secure networks.
  • On your Windows, swipe over to the All apps list from your phone, and then select Continuum
  • Select Set up.
  • Note: You will only see this screen the first time you connect.
  • Select Wireless adapter, then select Connect.
  • On the Connect screen, select the name of your PC.
  • If the PC prompts you to connect, select Yes. If you miss the prompt, you can select action center on the taskbar as the message should will appear there.

Note:

If you want to get more settings and options while you are connected to a PC, you should touch the Continuum banner at the top of your phone screen.

Connect a mouse and keyboard

  • You can use Continuum with your phone as a touchpad or use the mouse and keyboard, when you are connected your phone to a PC.
  • To do so, connect a mouse and keyboard and delve into word docs, Excel spreadsheets and email.
